Curtain comes down on Northern Region Div 1

The ZIFA Northern Region Division One curtain comes down this weekend with all the teams facing relegation playing at the same time tomorrow.

At least four teams will be demoted to Division Two considering that no Premier League team from the same division is demoted.

The region already has three teams relegated in Zatex, Seven Flames and DC Academy.

The battle for survival will be between Starbill, Darwin United, Blue Jets and ZRP Morris who have an outside chance.

Darwin United coach Stephen Kaisi believes they need luck and fighting spirit to survive.

Kaisi’s team hasn’t lost to Mushowani since they were in Division Two so they will likely use that psychological advantage to get a victory.

“I think the race is tough but we will try our best and it will be good that we focus on our match as other results will count when the games are over and we know our fate. The good thing is that we will be playing at home and the supporters will be behind us,” said Kaisi.

Darwin and Blue Jets are on 38 points, one ahead of Starbill who need a straight win against Blue Swallows to remain in the league.

Meanwhile, the annual United Methodist Church soccer tournament kicks off with the quarter-finals at Churchill Boy’s High tomorrow.

The event, running unfer the theme, “Evangelism through sport”, will see 16 teams fighting for honours in a round- robin knockout format.

Tournament organiser Bishop Douglas Mudzingwa said they are looking forward to a fun sports day spreading the gospel at the same time.

“The tournament is now an annual one and is growing with each passing year. Last year the event was called Great Harare Soccer Cup and it was won by Revelation of Mabelreign.

“This year we have renamed it to Vabvuwi we United Methodist church soccer tournament.

“We will have 16 teams which will come from as far as Norton taking part. Our aim is to promote evangelism through sport as well as to inspire and give hope to vulnerable groups and foster unity in diversity and fellowship through soccer,” said Mudzingwa.

The winners’ trophies will be presented by Eben Nhiwatiwa.
