Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kadoma City Council for 30 hectares for the university’s campus.

The campus will bring relief to prospective students in the city who have been travelling to other cities to access tertiary and university education.

Speaking after the signing ceremony at the Kadoma Town House last week, CUT Vice Chancellor Professor David Simbi said the campus should be responsive to the needs of the community.

“Growing an institution or community is not an easy task, it a collective responsibility,” he said. “All of us, our university, Kadoma City fathers and community in general have to be involved. In the same vein, we do not want to offer education for the sake of education, it must be a system that would produce goods and services.”

Prof Simbi said the Kadoma campus might in time develop into a fully-fledged university if given enough support. “For us to achieve that objective, which will probably be in years to come, we need to ask ourselves what sort of campus we are trying to create,” he said.

“We want a campus that responds to the needs of the community in Kadoma, Mashonaland West province and the nation. Education for its sake is no longer the prime motive for establishing campuses.”

Kadoma mayor Alderman Action Nyamukondiwa said they were grateful to have a tertiary institution.

“We are the only city in the province without a university,” he said. “We are grateful and hope that the land we availed you will make you build the campus as quickly as possible.

“I know funds may not be permitting due to the economic situation, but l hope within the next 12 months we will have noticeable progress.”

Alderman Nyamukondiwa applauded the City of Kadoma management for keeping the promise to avail land to Chinhoyi University of Technology.
