CUT raises wheat hectarage

Chinhoyi Bureau
CHINHOYI University of Technology working together with two other investors has put about 300 hectares of land under the irrigated winter wheat crop which is expected to reach yields of up to six tonnes per hectare.Yield has been steadily improving at the Hunyani Farm from about 4,5 tonnes in 2011 to 5,5 tonnes last year since the project involving Zim-China Wanjin Company was started.

The thriving crop is this year expected to give a better yield as there has been a marked improvement in the availability of electricity.
In an interview yesterday, Zim-China Wanjin Company deputy general manager Lieutenant Colonel Freedom Tsodzai said improved application of proper agro-concepts has seen production increase at the farm.

“When we started out we sought to boost the confidence of our investors so that they know that we are up to the task and that there is value in their investment. That confidence is now there and we see that we have combine harvesters which they put in and production is actually improving,” he said.

He said there are better prospects for good yields because there has been improved timing in planting this year and application of fertilisers.

The company has also about 400 hectares of the crop at Arda Sisi in Raffingora and about 100 hectares at Ommerstone Farm in Lion’s Den.
He said direct costs such as prohibitive fertiliser and raw water were negatively affecting wheat production in the country.
