Cyclone Batsirai, which has been building up in the Indian Ocean and was feared to be heading to Zimbabwe, is not likely to be a threat this week, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said.
However, thunderstorms and heavy rains are expected in some parts of the country from Thursday, especially in the Matabeleland provinces.
In a statement posted on their Twitter handle on Tuesday, the MSD said:
“Currently, Tropical Cyclone Batsirai and the tropical disturbance in the Indian Ocean are not affecting Zimbabwe’s weather this week. However, the cloud system to the west of the country, currently over Botswana, is our area of focus.
“This cloud band is moving eastward and is expected to sweep over Zimbabwe from Thursday evening, February 3, 2022, into the weekend.”
The MSD said thunderstorms and rains are expected in all Matabeleland and Bulawayo Metropolitan provinces from Thursday evening into Friday and will spread to the rest of the country from Friday into the weekend.
“Before this (Tuesday till Thursday afternoon) it should be mostly sunny and warm across Zimbabwe.“
