Cyclone Idai Zim-bound

Some parts of the country are today expected to experience strong winds and thunderstorms influenced by Tropical Cyclone Idai, which is developing in Mozambique, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said in a statement.

“Currently the cyclone is moving south-westwards at a speed of five kilometres per hour. If this present trajectory is maintained, it is expected to start moistening the country’s atmosphere, beginning with the Eastern Highlands today (Thursday),” reads the statement.

The department said the cyclone is expected to affect the eastern and south-eastern parts of the country such as Manicaland, Mashonaland East and parts of Masvingo.

It added that the cyclone, which hit the coast of Mozambique, will become a category three cyclone as it moves inland.

“The Tropical Cyclone Idai over the northern areas of the Mozambique Channel is slowly moving south-westwards and moistening the atmosphere over the eastern parts of Zimbabwe,” reads the statement.

“The cyclone which will be accompanied by scattered violent thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in the eastern parts of the country.

“Indications are that, the rains may come in sharp downpours, damaging winds, lightning, and hail and causing flash flooding in some areas.

“Harare will experience some rain, but it won’t be subject to the forecast cyclone.”
