Cyclone Idai: Zim on high alert

A powerful storm — Cyclone Idai — has hit Zimbabwe.

This weather system is giving rise to significant rainfall over Masvingo, Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central provinces.

The provinces are now at increased risk of flooding, damage to homes and infrastructure.  Government and other rescue teams are already on standby, ready to respond and support at-risk communities.

People are encouraged to stay alert and tune in to the latest news for safety advice and weather warnings.

In case of strong winds, it is safer to shelter in homes with strong roofs and to close all windows and doors.

In case of flooding, people should move to higher ground.

All open pits near homes schools and along children’s pathways must be filled up or closed.

Communities need to be on the lookout for falling or dangling electrical power lines and report such to the Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution Company or to the nearest police station. –
