BULAWAYO’S promising swimming sensation Andresious Cyprianos bettered Christian Brothers College’s Under-20 category 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly records during Wednesday’s inter-house competitions. Cyprianos who has represented Zimbabwe at regional competitions in the past clocked 28.96 seconds in the 50m backstroke to break the 30 seconds time set by a K van Jaarsvveld in 2000.
The Penguin Swimming Club athlete also broke a 16-year record in the 50m butterfly which was held by a B MacDonald.
Cyprianos had a time of 26.09 seconds beating MacDonald’s 27.50 seconds.
An elated Cyprianos who is a member of the Georgians House which finished second with 457 points behind the Davidians House said he was looking forward to maintaining his times.
“I am happy that I managed to break records and now I am targeting doing the same with the national records. I am going to continue working hard,” Cyprianos said.
The young swimmer who draws his inspiration from multi-Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps of the United States of America was the star of the day as he bagged seven trophies.
Cyprianos got trophies for his wins in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and individual medley.
He also got the best Under-20 prize.
Cyprianos also got two Open category trophies for the 200m freestyle and breast stroke events.
Other swimmers who excelled at the inter-house competitions and had trophy hauls are Dylan Ferguson of the winning house Davidians who got six trophies in the Under-15 category for his victories in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and individual medley.
He also got the Best Under-15 silverware.
In the Under-16s, Brendan Cyprianos got the best age-group’s accolade after bagging six trophies for his wins in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and individual medley races.
Davidians housemaster Itayi Taruwona was happy with his swimmers’ performance.
“Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence and the extra energy required to make an effort.
“I am proud of Team Davidians because they showed other contestants that drive today. Also to be thanked and mentioned is Thubelihle Khumalo the house captain and Kameron Tavares who together steered the ship to victory. Well done,” said Taruwona.
