THE D-day for a trio from Beitbridge which connived and struck to death a man who was having a picnic with his girlfriend in a bush, is set for today.
Brian Mukosi, Blessing Itai Chiri and Dereck Ndou appeared before High Court Judge Justice Bongani Ndlovu facing a charge of murder. They pleaded not guilty to the charge and were remanded in custody to Friday for judgment.
During the trial, the deceased’s wife Nyaradzo Gondo indicated that her husband left home on a pretext to pay for a housing stand.
“The deceased, Andy Masuka woke up and asked for some money that he intended to use to pay for his stand at a housing scheme. I gave him R12 000 and he left home at around 5pm. He later called me and advised me to prepare supper as he was returning home. At around 6 pm, l sent some messages but he did not respond,” she said.
Gondo stated that she heard about the deceased’s attack from her aunt.
“I was informed by my aunt, Pellagia Muzuru that she had seen from social media that my husband had been assaulted with a stone on the head and was in intensive care (in hospital). Muzuru then informed me about my husband’s death in the morning and when I inquired about the housing stand that the deceased had paid for, l could not find the documents and no one knew about it,” said Gondo.
The court heard that on 10 September 2020 at around 6pm, the deceased was with his girlfriend Simukai Mhike intending to have a picnic in the bush. The trio saw the couple relaxing in a grey Toyota Allion vehicle and they advanced towards them. The deceased spotted them, sensed danger and started the engine of the vehicle intending to drive off the scene.
One of the culprits then struck the deceased once with a stone, hitting him on the right side of the head just above the right ear. The deceased then fell unconscious and the trio stole a Samsung cellphone, a Huawei Y5 and R170. He was taken to Beitbridge District Hospital where he later died at around 1 am. Investigations were carried out leading to the arrest of the trio.
