D-Day for Zim squash

THE Squash Rackets Association of Zimbabwe (SRAZ) has been given until the end of today to pay registration fees for the country to participate in the World Squash Championships.

Zimbabwe is hoping to return to the global competition after a 38-year absence.

SRAZ applied for a waiver to pay after the deadline.

“We asked to be given more time to pay and the deadline we have been given is Wednesday. Registration fee is US$6 300. This covers for accommodation and meals. We’re appealing for assistance from the corporate world and well-wishers to assist us raise registration fees as well as funds to send a team of four players and two officials (a manager and coach),” said Lucky Mlilo, SRAZ president.

Thirty-two countries, three from Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Egypt, are set to compete in the Men’s World Squash Championships.

SRAZ is excited by the possibility of sending a team to the global competition for the first time since Zimbabwe’s last appearance in 1983.

SRAZ has a total budget of US$25 000 that will cover registration, accommodation, meals, airfares, kits and incidentals for its team.

SRAZ has also put in a bid for Zimbabwe to play host to next year’s Senior African Championships. – @ZililoR
