ZAPU leader Dumiso Dabengwa yesterday revealed that he was working with the ousted Zanu-PF heavyweights that include former Vice President Joice Mujuru and her allies to topple President Mugabe. Addressing journalists at the Bulawayo Press Club, Dabengwa said they had deliberated on a number of issues and agreed to join forces with the ousted Zanu-PF bigwigs namely Mujuru, Didymus Mutasa, Rugare Gumbo and Ray Kaukonde among others to fight against decisions made at the just ended 6th Zanu-PF National People’s Congress which was followed by the appointments of two new Vice Presidents and eight ministers.
“As Zapu we’re in discussions with the ousted Zanu-PF cadres, the likes of former Vice President Cde Joice Mujuru, Gumbo, Kaukonde, Mutasa and the engagement are on course as we to try to put our heads together to prevent dictatorship because we foresee that there is the possibility of it in the party. The ousted cadres shouldn’t take their fate lying down,” he said.
Dabengwa disputed that Zanu-PF secretary for finance and Transport and infrastructure Development Minister Dr Obert Mpofu participated in the war of liberation.
“He lied to people by going around telling people he fought battles from Victoria Falls to the greater part of Matabeleland when he never participated in a single battle. Actually, he was withdrawn from the struggle and went to India to study. I’ve authority to say that because I was Zipra commander,” said Dabengwa.
He however, declined to comment on the role played by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko and Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa during the liberation struggle.
“I cannot comment on other peoples’ history during the liberation struggle unless they say something against me,” he said.
Dabengwa acknowledged that Zimbabwe had some of the best police officers in the region when it comes to investigating crime but said he was surprised why investigations into accusations levelled against former Vice President Mujuru and her cabal were taking so long.
“We’ve such an excellent Central Intelligence Organisation, well trained police officers and we were expecting to see Mujuru being investigated before Grace Mugabe’s rallies. I know they are good at fabrication because I once faced treason charges,” said Dabengwa.
Former Vice President Mujuru and her alliances lost their Central Committee positions after they were rejected by their respective party districts to become ordinary card carrying members.
Apart from Mujuru, Didymus Mutasa and Nicholas Goche others who lost their Central Committee posts or ministerial positions include Dzikamai Mavhaire, Munacho Mutezo, Francis Nhema, Simbaneuta Mudarikwa and Olivia Muchena.
Kaukonde, Mutasa and Goche were reportedly at the forefront of plotting to assassinate the President with Mutasa telling his girlfriend that President Mugabe would be shot if he didn’t relinquish his post to Mujuru.
The former Zipra intelligence supremo denied allegations that he was against Ambassador Mphoko’s elevation saying that he was misquoted. He however accused the VP of atacking him first.
