A 37-year-old Harare man reportedly raped his 12-year-old daughter while his wife had gone for a church service in Murehwa.

The man appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Barbra Chimboza on Wednesday facing charges of rape and was remanded in custody to May 24.

The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on April 26 this year, the minor slept in the same room with her father.

It is alleged that the mother of the victim had gone to a church service in Murehwa with her two other children.

The court heard that the father woke up during the night and went on to force himself on his daughter.

It is the State’s case that on April 29, the child’s mother smelt an unusual odour from her daughter and without asking her, she handed her over to a church elder for a check up.

The church elder checked the minor’s privates and discovered white discharge, the court heard.

She advised the mother to escort the child to the clinic where upon examination, she was advised to report the case to the police.

A report was made to the police and the child was referred to Edith Oppeman Maternity Hospital where she was medically examined.

She revealed to the health workers that she was sexually abused by her father, the court heard.
