THE water level in the country’s major dams is below 100 percent with other dam levels going as low as 12 percent full, the Zimbabwe National Water Authority says in its latest report. Although the country has been receiving sporadic rains in different areas, Zinwa confirmed that this has not been of any significance to the dam water levels.
According to the report, most dams in the Gwayi, Manyame and Mazowe catchment areas are below 50 percent full.
Runde catchment is the worst affected with a majority of its dams having low water levels. The catchment is 12, 9 percent full while Gwayi is 40,7 percent.
Other catchments such as Manyame, Mazowe, Mzingwane, Save and Sanyati are above 50 percent full.
In the Gwayi catchment area, Khami Dam which is mainly for irrigation is 100 percent full due to low irrigation activities while Mananda
Dam which supplies water for irrigation and industry has the least water level of 3,9 percent.
Chivero Dam in the Manyame catchment area which mainly supplies water for irrigation is 82 percent full while few dams in the same catchment are less than 50 percent full. Most of the dams in the area are meant for irrigation.
Mutirikwi Dam which is the major supplier of water in Masvingo is 6,4 percent full while Mushandike which is mainly for irrigation purpose is 0,9 percent full.
The storage levels of dams supplying water to Harare and other surrounding areas are still comfortable with Lake Chivero and Manyame Dam at 82,4 and 81,7 percent full.
Mazvikadei Dam that usually sustains irrigation farming in Mashonaland West is almost full at 89,8 percent while Rufaro Dam in Marondera is 77 percent full.
In Manicaland, Osborne Dam is almost full standing at 93,9 percent while Siya Dam which complements Manjirenjire in supplying water to the Lowveld sugarcane plantations and industries has a low water level of 19,7 percent.
Bulawayo is still comfortable since Matshabezi Dam which supplies the city with water is 93 percent full.
