DANCEHALL artistes will go head-to-head in a clash set for the boxing ring on November 2 at the City Sports Centre. The gig, which is a collaboration between Chipaz Promotions and Delta Force Sports Trust, will also see a bout between Zimbabwean boxer Tapiwa Tembo and Zambia’s Gibon Kamota in a12-round World Boxing Union bantamweight title fight. This is the first time a Zimbabwean is fighting for a world championship belt.
“We want to promote any form of entertainment. As we grew up boxing was entertainment and this is why we have come on board to give our support. As the boxers will be fighting, there is going to be a musical clash. The musicians will perform after each fight and it is going to be non-stop action,” Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions said.
Asked if the musicians will not fight while in the ring, Chipaz said they would ensure that chanters will not cross the line.
“Yes, we are aware that some artistes might want to go physical but we are not going to allow that. The gig is just for entertainment in a different set-up but that shouldn’t incite the musicians to fight,” he said.
He said boxing had lost popularity over the past years and this collaborative effort would uplift both boxing and music in a positive way. Chimbodza said they brought dancehall musicians because the venue could not accommodate other artistes with full bands.
“We want these artistes to perform in a competitive way so they will clash in the boxing ring. The only difference is that music would be for purely entertainment purposes not competition,” he said.
Artistes in the line-up include Sniper Storm, Guspy Warrior, Freeman, Shinsoman, Dadza D and Killah T while emcee Godfatha Templeman will be outside the ring.
Sniper Storm, who is riding high with his chart topper, hailed organisers for coming up with the initiative. He said it was through such collaborations that boxing and dancehall develop for the better.
“It is quite exciting that music and boxing fans will be entertained at the same time. As for the show I will not leave anything to chance because I have a reputation to protect. I am going to give a hard time to whoever is going into the ring with me,” he said.
Killah T, whose claim to fame was after the release of the hit single “Popopopo” featuring Shinsoman, said he was ready to battle.
“Battles give me the pleasure to deliver the best in music and this is part of dancehall music which you cannot run away from.
“There is going to be a lot of free-styling as well and that is where you should fireworks,” he said.
Guspy Warrior also fired his warning
shots saying he had he the vibe to thrill the crowd.
Guspy is still basking in the glory of his latest release “Ita Seunononga” which is receiving heavy rotation on most DJ’s playlists.
Like most dancehall artistes who are doing well in Zimbabwe, Guspy performs with a full band and he was one of the artistes who lit up the stage at the Lion Lager Campus Activation Nights.
