Bulawayo-based producer Datboifresh who has become a hit at most house music events in the city is preparing to release his album, J A Z Z Y.
The album, set for release on May 1, represents maturity and refinement rather than reinvention.
The album is a collaborative body of work featuring AkhonaMP from South Africa and Soweto-based producer Simplekeyz. Datboifresh said the project reflects growth and transition shared between three creatives from different backgrounds.
“People will hear growth, not just in production, but in storytelling. It’s the story of three individuals coming from different spaces, figuring life out through sound, and finding unity in music. It moves from struggle, to discovery, to confidence,” he said.
Each producer contributes a distinct layer. AkhonaMP brings structure and balance, known for his subtle but strong production style.
“He strengthens the foundation without overpowering it,” Datboifresh said.

Simplekeyz adds depth and musical richness, especially through piano progressions.
“He brought a different musicality… He completed the puzzle,” he added.
At the heart of the album is emotion and feeling.
“The north star for this album was feeling. Not just making people dance, but making them feel something deeper while they dance,” he said.
He describes the project as sitting between nostalgia and elevation – music that encourages both movement and reflection.
“We wanted every track to sit somewhere between nostalgia and elevation, like a memory you can groove to.”
Datboifresh’s growth as a producer is evident in his rising international reach, with over 12 000 monthly Spotify listeners and strong streaming audiences in South Africa and the United States. He credits mentors such as Zulu Da Housemaniac and Kotwane Hikwa for shaping his journey from bedroom producer to professional artist.
Now more intentional in his craft, he focuses on detail and emotional impact.
“It’s less about doing more, and more about doing the right things,” he said.
Datboifresh’s influences include Kabza De Small, from whom he learnt discipline and consistency, and Kelvin Momo, known for emotional depth and atmosphere. However, he stresses originality.
“I always filter it through my own experiences – that’s what makes it Datboifresh.”
An intimate listening session held in Bulawayo recently confirmed early audience connection, with listeners responding strongly to the album’s structure and emotion.
