THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has set August 2, 2025 as the date for the Chinhoyi Ward 14 by-election.
The seat fell vacant following the conviction of CCC representative and Chinhoyi deputy mayor Chipo Mlotshwa last week. Mlotshwa was convicted of acquiring a second discounted residential stand from council when she was entitled to only one.
The deputy mayor was jailed for three years with one year suspended on condition of good behaviour.
She escaped a custodial sentence after a Chinhoyi magistrate commuted the sentence to 840 hours of community service at Alaska Primary School.
According to a press statement issued by ZEC chief elections officer, Mr Simbarashe Tongayi, the nomination court will sit at the Chinhoyi Municipality town clerk’s offices on June 3.
“It is notified in terms of Section 121A of the Electoral Act /Chapter 2:13), that a vacancy has been in Ward 14 of Chinhoyi Municipality,” he said.
“The Nomination Court, for purposes of receiving nominations of candidates for election as to councillor for the vacant ward, shall sit on Tuesday, 3 June 2025, commencing from 10 am to 4 pm.”
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has fixed August 2, 2025 as the day on which polling shall take place if it becomes necessary in terms of Section 125(4) (b) of the Electoral Act.
