R&B artiste Dave Neyman, born David Yakobe, says his journey in music began in a school choir and has since grown into a pursuit driven by passion, persistence and personal experience.
The singer, who describes himself as a free-spirited and outgoing person, traces his first exposure to music back to Budiriro Primary School in Gweru, where he sang in the school choir.

“That was the beginning. Since then I’ve always been into music,” he said.
His interest deepened in high school when he began exploring songwriting, shifting from performing cover songs to creating his own material.
He also credits his family background for influencing his path, saying music runs in his blood as his father was also a musician.
Dave Neyman’s sound blends local and international influences. He cites late Zimbabwean musician Garry Mapanzure and Hillzy as key inspirations, alongside international star Justin Bieber.
He describes his style as simple, melodic and emotionally driven, focused on themes that listeners can relate to.
His breakout track Ndiwe was inspired by real-life experience rather than a planned studio concept.
“I was singing it for a girl I was dating at the time,” he said.

He says most of his music is drawn from personal experiences, especially themes of love and heartbreak.
However, the rising artiste says his journey has not been without challenges. Chief among them is the struggle to fund studio recordings in a difficult economic environment.
“Studio money is a challenge in a struggling economy,” he said.
He also raised concern about industry practices, saying some producers are more focused on financial gain than developing talent.
“Sometimes producers just want your money. They don’t care about your music,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Dave believes the local music industry is improving and encourages greater support for upcoming artistes.
“It’s growing, and we need to grow with it,” he said.

On his creative process, he says songs often begin with a melody, and he prefers to write in silence.
He also admits that he only feels a song is complete once it resonates with listeners.
“You can never be satisfied unless other people tell you how they feel about the song,” he said.
At the core of his work is a desire to connect with audiences through relatable themes such as love, hope and heartbreak.
For Dave Neyman, success is not defined by fame alone, but by growth and impact.
“Success is the achievements and growth I attain in life and being able to positively impact others,” he said.
