THE District Development Fund (DDF) has rolled out a programme of drilling new boreholes in the Midlands to increase the availability of water in line with Government’s Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) that seeks to improve lives.
Government purchased six new borehole drilling rigs and allocated Midlands province a rig, which would be used to drill an initial 17 new boreholes and flushing out 20 existing ones across the province.
The new equipment, which has a capacity of drilling two boreholes per day, would also be used to drill boreholes for private clients with money raised going to central Government for use on other developmental projects.
This was revealed by DDF Midlands provincial coordinator Mrs Molly Shonhiwa during the commissioning of the borehole rig, which was allocated to the province in Chiwundura by Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Owen Ncube.
“Our organisation purchased six such machines so as Midlands province we were allocated one machine so we thought as we started other works our Minister of State has to commission it.
“We have our PSIP Government funded programme, this year we are supposed to be doing 17 boreholes for the whole province with the money that was budgeted we are supposed to be flushing out 20 boreholes as well.
“The new equipment can also do boreholes for commercial purposes, if someone has money can also pay to DDF and we drill a borehole for the client and the money raised will go to central Government and they look at areas of priority,” said Mrs Shonhiwa.
Minister Ncube said the disbursement of the rigs was in line with the new political dispensation’s thrust to ensure that everyone get access to clean source of water.
“We are working towards the restoration of our legacy as a caring Government that ensures clean source of water for all citizens.
“DDF has not been able to fulfil its mandate because it was under capitalised,” said Minister Ncube.
