DEAF Arts National Culture Entertainment, a ground-breaking drama group consisting entirely of members with hearing impairments is on a quest to dismantle communication barriers and celebrate deaf culture through theatrical performances.
Traversing Zimbabwe, the group established in 2018 showcases its talent while advocating for deaf rights. Having previously performed in Bulawayo, they are now heading south to Beitbridge to perform at Vhembe High School today, starting at 9 am. Their production, “The Missing Bridge”, will be presented entirely in sign language.
Tsungirirai Tsikira, the manager of Deaf Arts, expressed the significance of the play: “The Missing Bridge is not merely a play; it’s a tribute to deaf culture, identity, and the potency of sign language in bridging gaps and fostering connections. It sheds light on the challenges encountered by the hearing impaired community and advocates for increased inclusion and understanding.”
Tsikira said this event assures an immersive and enlightening experience for the audience.
“We firmly believe that the stage serves as a platform where the hearing impaired community can shine, express themselves and share their narratives. Attendees will have the chance to engage with members of the deaf community, learn sign language, and gain insight into the vibrant culture and unique experiences of hearing impai individuals,” she said.
