Deaths, looting as Chile celebrate

SANTIAGO. — A man was shot in Santiago on Saturday night after he confronted a group of students as they celebrated Chile’s historic Copa America success.

The host nation beat tournament favourites Argentina on penalties after a tense goalless draw at the Estadio Nacional.

Thousands packed into Plaza Italia to celebrate the country’s first piece of silverware while the squad took an open-top bus to a reception with the president at La Moneda Palace. But elsewhere in the capital, a man named locally as Luis Alfredo Venegas was killed after reportedly leaving his home to speak to the group who were firing a gun.

Later, two men, Pablo Mora Bobadilla (90) and Marco Antonio Panes Calfeque (48) were knocked down and killed by a vehicle.

Three other men were taken to hospital with one suffering life-threatening injuries and the driver reportedly fled the scene.

In south Santiago, witnesses claimed up to 100 people attempted to loot a supermarket while there were arrests in the cities of Antofagasta and Valparaiso. — Mailonline.
