adminAddis Ababa – A Declaration of Intent was signed today at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, between the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The signing ceremony began with a word from the AU Commissioner of Social Affairs Dr. Mustapha S. Kaloko who emphasised that the accord embodies a united front through the efforts of enhancing youth employment within African nations.
The declaration focuses on “Creating Employment for Accelerating Youth Development and Empowerment,” for each organization to uphold in their respective fields and to promote throughout Africa.
The Joint Youth Employment Initiative for Africa (JYEIA) specifies the duties of the four parties, which include three broad areas of intervention: i.e. policy-level intervention, direct intervention and knowledge production.
According to the declaration, the African Union is obliged to “advocate, promote, and monitor the implementation of the Declaration on Employment Promotion and Poverty Alleviation,” which was enacted during the Extraordinary Summit of African Heads of State and Government in Burkina Faso in September 2004.
The continuation of these efforts was seen today, as the representatives of these four organizations pledged to continue promoting youth employment. – African Union Commission.
