EDITOR — It is disturbing to note that up to now Grade 7 assistant examiners have not been invited to mark 2012 examinations despite the fact that the curtain for the third term school year is coming down on 6 December.
What is also nauseating is that no official communication from Zimsec has been made to the stakeholders so that they are in the picture about why there has been such a delay and how the inconvenience from such a delay will be addressed.
This attitude from a Government department which is entrusted with running the nation’s examinations is not only surprising, but disappointing.
It should be borne in mind that results from the Grade 7 examinations are principally used by parents to secure Form One places for their children, although some boarding schools are using the not so objective entrance tests to select their prospective students.
A delay in inviting these assistant examiners will naturally lead to a delay in the release of the results to the candidates.
One wonders, therefore, whether Zimsec is aware of the inconvenience it is going to cause by this inefficiency. Whatever excuse Zimsec has must have been communicated so that unnecessary speculation and anxiety in the nation are minimised.
I find this delay in inviting Grade 7 assistant examiners a great monument of injustice to the pupils, their parents and the nation at large.
This will continue to soil the image of our education system which used to be the pride of the whole region as the stakeholders will keep on losing confidence in the way our examinations are run.
The nation is waiting for an explanation, Professor Norman Maphosa! It is high time that this malady is addressed once and for all.
Fannuel Mabhugu, Mazowe.
