Delegates to the just-ended historic Zanu-PF 6th National People’s Congress described the event as a major success, as they left the capital early yesterday, heading back to their various provinces. They said in separate interviews that the congress was one of a kind in the history of Zanu-PF which had seen some of the heavyweights being ousted for their actions which were not in line with the aspirations of the people.
Zanu-PF Women’s League spokesperson Cde Monica Mutsvangwa said the 6th Congress brought an end to Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s plans to oust President Mugabe.
“The congress went on very well and it actually brought out Vice-President Mujuru’s plans to ouster the President,” she said. “We knew that something was not well in the party and all these issues were solved at the congress.”
Harare provincial chairperson Cde Goodwills Masimirembwa said: “It was a fantastic congress. I think that it demonstrated one thing that there’s total support for President Mugabe.”
He said the delegates came out enriched by the wise words of the President who urged them to be servants of the people.
Mashonaland East interim provincial chairperson, Cde Phineas Chihota, described the congress as one of the best and longest to be held by Zanu-PF.
Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association secretary for information and publicity Cde Mandi Chimene said the all encompassing resolutions made showed that Zanu-PF was strong.
“It has emerged stronger this time,” she said. “It’s important and interesting that people used to complain about Zanu-PF where some individuals were using the party name to engage in corrupt activities, but the party has taken a strong stand against that.
“This time it showed the nation that it’s not Zanu-PF, but individuals who are corrupt and we’ll not continue with such people.”
Cde Chimene said there were no individuals greater than the party. “President Mugabe is in charge of Zanu-PF and he shall remain in charge as long as he’s still there,” she said. “We still have him around and we want him around.”
Mashonaland Central chairperson Cde Dickson Mafios said the congress came up with sound resolutions and took the stance to deal with corruption and those who wanted to topple the President.
“We hope that 2015 would be a better year since Zanu-PF has been rejuvenated,” he said.
He took a swipe at VP Mujuru, saying she was undisciplined and that her level of interference within the party had gone out of control.
Matabeleland North chairperson Cde Richard Moyo said Zanu-PF was poised for a new era after the congress.
“Things are going to change since it’ll be an end of factionalism within the party,” he said.
Masvingo interim provincial chairperson Cde Paradzai Chakona said they were happy with what transpired at the congress. “We’re also happy that the President spoke of reuniting and reconciling our people and this is a positive development,” he said.
Youth League secretary for legal affairs Cde Tongai Kasukuwere said the congress recognised the role of youths in the party and showed there were no individuals bigger than the party.
Zanu-PF member Cde Bester Ndebele from Matabeleland North said he was happy with President Mugabe’s endorsement as the party’s First Secretary.
“We were also happy with Cde Grace Mugabe for being elected as the party’s Secretary for Women’s Affairs and also the election of the Central Committee members,” he said.
Another party member, Cde Fello Zulu from Matabeleland North said he was happy with the attendance at the congress.
