DeMbare juniors, BN Academy miss out on Gold Cup quarters

ZIFA Harare Province Division Two Open Gold Cup defending champions BN Academy and last year’s finalists Dynamos Juniors will miss out in today’s quarter-finals to be played at different venues this afternoon.

The two sides will watch from the sidelines the rivalry between Mabvuku-based sides More love and Mabvuku United reignited in the battle of Mabvuku Roayalty.

The cup which is in its second year running saw 38 clubs from both Division Two A and B sides taking part in a knockout round-robin format.

In its inaugural year, BN Academy were the inaugural winners after edging Dynamos Juniors on penalties.

Open Gold Holdings, who are the principal sponsor of the tournament bankrolled US$5 000 for the tournament.

Managing Director for Open Gold Holdings, Vincent Chawonza said they want to see junior football growing in the country and have opted to start with ZIFA Harare Province Division Two League.

“We are here to stay and try to help develop our football from junior levels which are key in the growth of our football.  “Our aim is to see junior football grow and it is we who can help drive the initiative so as Open Gold we decided to give back as part of our social corporate responsibility

“At the same time, as an individual, I am passionate about junior football. If we don’t nurture the young ones it will mean as a country, we are destroying the future.  “Unlike last year we are going to put a big amount into buying kits both for the winners and runners-up such that the current players and those who will come benefit,” said Chawonza.

The tournament is expected to spread to other provinces with Bulawayo likely to be the next port of call.

ZIFA Harare Province Division Two League chairman, Robert Tembo is delighted to see their partnership with Open Gold growing.

“We are happy that Open Gold Holdings are sticking to their word. Many neglect football for lower leagues but Open Gold have stood out and we cherish them for their commitment.

“You can tell that going forward our football will never be the same and it’s up to the teams to represent us well. This will go a long way for our league and the career of these youngsters,” said Tembo.

Gold Cup Quarter Finals Fixtures:

Effernburg v Royal Stars (Allan Wilson 13:00), Simbisa v DC Academy (St Joseph High 11:00), Harare Poly v Sprouting (Poly Grounds 2pm), More Love v Mabvuku United (Mabvuku 2pm).
