Fashion bloggers, enthusiasts, models and journalists thronged Fife Avenue Shopping Mall for the September Fashion Show which saw seven local designers showcasing their latest designs last Saturday. The two-day fashion show featured South African designers, Bongane Shabangu of Indwandwe Couture and Nokwakha Qobo of Nokwakha who presented their latest offerings for the Spring-Summer 2017 season. The panel of local designers included award-winning Nompumelelo Marilyn Samambgwa of Noe eS, Tapfumanei “Coco” Munenge presented his Pink Persuasion Collection for SS”17, Claudia Byron, Ishmael Tsakatsa of Zargue’sia, Ngoni Motsi of Chenna Nenni, Mehreen Kamal of Reen Zara and Sarudzai Murungu.
Others included Natsai Mujuru of Gems of Dune, Lauryn Chisikwa of House of Lau, Kimberly Masimbe of House of KikiM which specialises in contemporary, quirky, vintage inspired women and men’s apparel and accessories. Saneliso Mpofu of Sanah Designs and David Mnaba of The Web were some of the designers who were there.
Nompumelelo Samambgwa, the founder and head producer of the show stated that September is the January of fashion hence they called it the September Fashion Show.
The initiative is to give the established local designers a platform because of the absence of Zim Fashion Week since the big fashion shows are usually in spring/summer time.
“The idea came about when Zimbabwe Fashion Week announced that they were taking a break and that they only had young designers so I thought why not create a platform for established designers to showcase their collections,” she said.
Samanbgwa ventured into this, not only to provide entertainment for the audience but also to create a market for the fashion designers.
She said, “It doesn’t make sense to have a collection that just sits in the wardrobe so they have to make sell-able clothes because I want them to make money as much as I also want to make money.”
She was ecstatic about the successful event, saying it was a fulfilment of her aspirations as a young promoter for fashion designers.
