Construction of a Government secondary school is underway in Ward 4 of Murehwa Rural District Council using devolution funds, as the Second Republic continues to fulfil its promises of bringing services closer to the people.
The construction of Ndemera Secondary School in Matututu Village, has brought a major relief to learners who have been braving long distances to the next school.
The school will become the second secondary school in the area.
This week, Murehwa North legislator Cde Daniel Garwe toured the school site, where a new block of two classrooms has already been completed, and learners already using it.
The second block is nearing completion, as well as the teachers’ quarters.
Already, there is a solar powered borehole supplying clean water to the school.
Cde Garwe thanked Government and the local authority for constructing the school.
“There are various programmes funded by devolution in this constituency. We are here in Matututu, Ward 4, Murehwa and there is only one secondary school and this is now the second one being built by devolution funds,” he said.
“The other school is more than 8km from here, hence we decided to have another secondary school.
“Plans are there to build a primary school here so that it feeds to these secondary schools. President Mnangagwa is emphasising that services should be closer to the people. So it is critical that pupils do not travel or walk for long distances to the next school.”
Cde Garwe said he was happy with the construction progress and said he hoped that by April, the second block would have been completed.
“Also the teachers house should be completed,” said Cde Garwe.
Murehwa Ward 4 Councillor, Cde Ephraim Takaendesa, said council chose to build a school in Matututu after realising the challenge that children were facing of walking for long distances to the nearest school.
“Construction of this school is funded by devolution. Our children have been walking for about 17 km to the nearest school. I want to thank President Mnangagwa for devolution funds that were channelled to the construction of this school.
“We are also getting assistance from parents who are supplying labour, sand and bricks. We are hoping that soon this other block will be complete,” said Cllr Takaendesa.
Ndemera Secondary School head, Mrs Loyce Madondo, commended Government for constructing the school.
“We are happy for the school. This block was opened last year, in the Third Term. We have one complete block of two classrooms and another block is nearing completion. This is good for this community.
“I want to thank President Mnangagwa for availing resources which enabled the establishment of this secondary school. We also thank our local authority for using devolution funds in this community.
“As teachers, we will work hard to ensure our learners receive the best education.”
A Form 3 learner at the new school, Mazviita Madeyi, thanked Murehwa Rural District Council for building a secondary school for them.
“We have been walking for a long distance to the next school and that has been demoralising a lot of us. However, this new school near us has motivated many and we are thankful to our President and our local authority for the school.
“We hope that more blocks including science and computer laboratories will be built here for our benefit.”
Another learner, Peter Matambanadzo, said Government should be commended for ensuring that education is accessed near them.
“The school has brought relief to us, we have been walking for long distances and by the time we get to school, we will be exhausted. The new school has brought a major relief to many learners and we will always be grateful to our authorities.”
