WHEN the Premier Soccer League announced a three-week break on June 1, Hwange were in all sorts of problems.
Not only had they parted ways with coach Nation Dube, but Chipangano were also experiencing one of their worst runs in the top-flight league.
Hwange once won in 14 matches and anchored the log standings with eight points out of a possible 42.
They were also starting to feel the effects of long-distance travelling, having been to Bulawayo twice, Shamva, Mhondoro, Harare, Zvishavane, and Mutare.
When their new coach Rodwell Dhlakama arrived in Matabeleland North, Hwange, had already suffered seven losses.
Dhlakama has been in charge of only one match, a 0-1 loss against Manica Diamonds at Sakubva on May 26.
And the veteran coach is enjoying this break, which he thinks will give his side time to recuperate and re-strategise.
The break has also allowed him to adjust to the new environment in Hwange without the pressure that comes with fixtures.
Dhlakama joined Hwange on May 20, a few days after he severed ties with Chisumbanje-based side GreenFuel.
“The break came at the right time,” said Dhlakama.
“I need to adjust to the new environment without the pressure of the games and also have more time to watch the players at training.”
Given their location, Hwange are bound to travel long distances when they play away fixtures.
By the time PSL announced the break, Chipangano had traversed over 8 200 km.
“We have to deal with many issues here including fatigue because Hwange travels a lot,” said Dhlakama.
“So, this break was a huge blessing for us. I am sure the boys will come back more rejuvenated.”
Hwange have not won a league match since their opening win against Yadah at the Colliery on March 10.
They have lost against Bulawayo Chiefs, Simba Bhora, TelOne, Chegutu Pirates, Chicken Inn, CAPS United, FC Platinum, and Manica Diamonds.
Their five draws have come against Dynamos, Ngezi Platinum Stars, Herentals, Arenel Movers, and ZPC Kariba.
Hwange have scored seven goals and conceded 19.
Such a scenario is forcing Dhlakama to think about adding more fire-power to his squad when the mid-season transfer window opens on July 1.
“As a coach, you are never satisfied so there’s a huge possibility we will beef up the squad during the mid-season window.
“I have been in charge of one game against Manica Diamonds and I didn’t see much, but I am sure with this break we will have more time to make some assessments,” said Dhlakama.
