SIXTEEN people died of diarrhoea countrywide last month, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said. According to the ministry’s disease surveillance report released this week, this brings the total number of people who have died of diarrhoea so far this year to 365 out of the 322 644 cases reported.
The report says 322 644 cases were reported during the week ending August 23. “Of the reported cases 6 853 and six deaths were from the under five years of age,” reads the report.
The deaths were reported in Marondera district in Mashonaland East Province (7), Hurungwe district (4), Chegutu district (2) and Mhondoro district (2) all in Mashonaland West Province and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (1).
The provinces which reported the highest number of diarrhoea cases are Masvingo with 1 715 followed by Manicaland with 1 597. Common diarrhoea cases remain high because their determinants which include, safe water, sanitation, and hygiene remain unavailable or continue to have very low coverage.
