AN unheralded Zimbabwean-born professional boxer based in the United Kingdom wants to come back home and fight under the local boxing board.

Dzikamai Joseph Maphosa (30), is a flyweight pugilist based in Yorkshire, who has 16 professional fights under his belt.

Maphosa has already applied for a licence from the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZNBWCB).

He wants to fight under Clyde Musonda’s Delta Force Boxing stable and could step into a local ring as early as December.

According to seasoned promoter Musonda, Maphosa (14-1-1), is one of several Zimbabwean-born boxers in the UK, who are angling to fight under the Zimbabwe Boxing Board.

“He (Maphosa) likes to fight under the Zimbabwe Boxing Board and he also wants to fight under Delta Force stable.

“He wants to come back and fight in Zimbabwe, so we are looking at giving him a fight in December,” Musonda told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

Maphosa has since submitted his application.

He is currently fighting under UK-based Natural Progression Academy, but will soon be registered under Delta Force, with Musonda immediately becoming his manager.

“Maphosa says he wants to challenge for African titles, including the coveted African Boxing Union belts, which are a direct route to World Boxing Council titles,” said Musonda.

“It’s good news for us. It’s good to have boxers of Zimbabwean origins coming back home to fight.

“This is good for the country’s boxing image.

“Right now Maphosa has applied for a local boxing licence and the process is ongoing.”

Zimbabwe has several boxers excelling at varying scales in England and the rest of Europe.

Heavyweight boxer, Derek Chisora, who has fought some of the top boxers in his weight division including former World Boxing Council champion Tyson “Gipsy King” Fury is the most prominent.

The 40-year-old Chisora has a 35-13-0 record and his recent win came against Joe Joyce in July. Chisora has also fought and lost against undisputed World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Light heavyweight Mac Shumba Pemhiwa and welterweight Tamuka Muchapondwa, are some of the Zimbabwean boxers plying their trade in Europe.
