THE Zimbabwe Pickleball Association (ZPA) has launched a global diaspora initiative aimed at accelerating the growth of the sport by mobilising Zimbabweans living abroad to support their development programmes.

Pickleball is a paddle sport combining tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played with a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball on a badminton-sized court

Dubbed the “Zimbabwe Pickleball Diaspora Community Initiative”, the campaign seeks to recruit players, coaches, referees, club owners, sponsors and pickleball enthusiasts from across the world to serve as voluntary Global Ambassadors for the sport.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the sport through equipment donations, international partnerships, talent development and increased global exposure for Zimbabwean players.

Under the programme, Global Ambassadors will help source pickleball equipment for communities in Zimbabwe, establish links with international clubs and organisations, promote the sport in their respective countries of residence and create opportunities for Zimbabwean athletes to compete on regional and international stages.

ZPA president Mthandazo Ngwenya said the association was tapping into the expertise, networks and goodwill of Zimbabweans abroad to build a sustainable future for the sport.

“We are inviting all Zimbabweans in the diaspora, those born abroad with Zimbabwean roots and everyone who believes in our vision to become part of this journey. Together, we can transform pickleball into one of Zimbabwe’s leading sports,” said Ngwenya.

He said the initiative was about giving people an opportunity to contribute to national development through sport, regardless of where they lived.

“Wherever you are, your country needs you. Remember, home is best,” said Ngwenya.

He said the initiative will strengthen grassroots development while positioning Zimbabwe as one of Africa’s emerging pickleball nations.

“Since its formation, the association has expanded the sport into several provinces through schools, clubs and community programmes, with participation continuing to grow across the country.

“The diaspora campaign is expected to further boost that momentum by creating stronger international networks and attracting greater investment into the sport.”
