A MAN from Lionsden has learnt that even an attempt to commit rape is a serious crime after being jailed for 15 years by the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the man ambushed his victim on 23 September 2025 around 8PM. “The offender aggressively pushed the victim to the roadside and pinned her down, attempting to rape her,” the NPAZ said.
Before he could carry out the assault, a brave passerby heard the woman’s screams and rushed to her rescue, forcing the attacker to flee. He was caught soon after and arrested on the spot.
The NPAZ praised the alert bystander for intervening, saying community vigilance can help prevent sexual violence. “This verdict confirms that sexual offences, including attempts, will be met with the full severity of the law,” said the prosecuting authority.
The authority reminded the public that the law does not take attempted rape lightly, as the trauma and danger faced by victims are just as real.
“NPAZ urges members of the community to actively participate in ensuring public safety.”
“If you see someone in danger, speak up, step in or call for help. Silence only strengthens abusers,” added the NPAZ.
