adminFinancial stress, marital infidelity and domestic violence are behind the increase in divorces in Zimbabwe over the past two years, it has emerged.
Statistics from the High Court show that the country recorded an average of 96 divorces monthly in 2012, a figure that has grown to 105.
Lawyer Ms Doreen Gapare said no particular age group was especially susceptible to divorce.
“People from all walks of life are going through divorce these days and cases involved young people from ages 22 to 38, to even the elderly up to the ages of 60 years (are involved),” she said.
Ms Gapare added: “Many men are running away from their responsibility and this is making it hard for the women, especially considering our current economic situation. Monetary issues are also a factor in divorces these days.”
An officer with Christian Counselling Centre urged couples to seek counselling before their opting for divorce.
She said their centre attended to about 25 couples every week “and a lot of marriages are revived from the sessions we conduct”.
