A new musical sensation is electrifying the music scene in Bulawayo with innovative beats and boundless energy. DJ Smaller is a rising star on the local horizon, bringing a fresh sound to the city’s party scene and leaving audiences in awe.
The journey of Hilary Taboka Bango, known as DJ Smaller, commenced during the challenging year of the pandemic in 2020. Despite the hurdles, this dynamic DJ emerged as a standout talent, earning a devoted following for his distinct sound and high-octane performances.
“After completing my A-levels at Agape High School, I linked up with Fudu media, a team of talented DJs who helped me hone my skills and learn the ropes. I got to collaborate and mingle with some of the city’s most respected DJs, like DJ Nickymix, DJ Mzoe, and DJ Juza. They were like my mentors, helping me slowly but surely build my skills and reputation as a DJ,” he said.
With no prior musical background or DJing knowledge, DJ Smaller’s mentors ignited his passion and set him on a remarkable journey.
“No music chops, zero DJ knowledge, but mentors sparked the flame. Taught myself, rocked the clubs in Bulawayo which include Boundary, Greys Inn, the Smokehouse. Venues conquered in Bulawayo, and beyond: Gwanda, Beitbridge, Victoria Falls, and Gweru.
“Tutorials ignited a passion, mentors stoked the flames, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge transformed a curious observer into a committed performer, captivating audiences and creating unforgettable experiences,” he said.
DJ Smaller preached the importance of diversifying income streams in the unpredictable gig economy of the music industry.
“The unpredictable tides of the DJ game demand a savvy hustle, a constant hunt for new revenue sources to weather the stormy waters of booking uncertainty. Persistence and resourcefulness are the twin engines that drive the DJ’s journey, a journey that requires both talent and tenacity,” he said.
The challenges of gear gaps and payment pitfalls are perpetual concerns for DJs, acting as significant barriers to success in an already competitive industry. Unpaid gigs and inadequate equipment can hinder a DJ’s growth, making the climb to the top an arduous expedition.
“Performing with a lacklustre set-up and not getting paid is like trying to climb a mountain in flip-flops — it’s an uphill battle that leaves you empty-handed. Despite raising the roof and making the crowd go wild, going home empty-pocketed is like a slap in the face, a harsh reminder of the cold realities of the DJ grind,” he said.
