Djembe monks tour Botswana

The tour was organised by their manager Bheki Bhehane and their tour manager Thandolwethu Sibanda. On Friday the group were on Botswana radio station, Yarona FM, and after their appearance on television they went to perform at the Miller party organised by Fusion Entertainment in Gaborone.

The quartet of Khotso “Tortured Drum” Nare, Ngqabutho “Slimza Wa Afrika” Ncube, Ndumiso “Black Cee” Tshuma and Emmanuel “RootzKolossal” Nkomo has come up with their very own genre of music that has been received well their fans.

In an interview from Botswana yesterday, RootzKolosal said their appearance on BTV was a major boost as their music was well received.

He said the tour was a chance to take Bulawayo music outside the country.

“Our single with SA producer Mr Shabz, Impendulo was well received by people who came to see us perform. Our appearance live on BTV’s Flavour Dome gave us a major boost as we managed to take our organic Bulawayo music to the whole of Africa and bring Africa to Bulawayo,” said RootzKolossal.

He said the tour was an eye-opener as it showed them the processes of producing an album.

“This tour gave us a chance to take a few notes as we are in the process of producing our album. The tour was just what we needed and it was a chance to carry out a baseline survey on how our neighbours Botswana appreciate live tribal house music,” said RootzKolossal.

His colleague Black Cee said their music made a good impression on South African DJs who expressed shock at the high standard of music in the country.

“This tour saw us perform alongside SA DJs Bhekzin Terris and Eltonik who expressed shock at the existence of such powerful works in Bulawayo. Coming out to Botswana got us to gather notes on traditional Motswana sounds and we will incorporate them in our works. Our industry is all about collaborating and forming synergies as a way of learning new forms of art. Our tour took us to a point where we are not shy or too proud to learn from other artistes,” he said.

Slimza Wa Afrika said it was an unforgettable experience and they learnt a lot and thanked All-Masters Holdings for affording them the opportunity to shine.

He said local promoters should take emulate the organisers and give Bulawayo acts a chance to perform and wow crowds.

“With so much competition from SA entertainers, All-Masters Holdings gave us a platform to rock Gaborone and also perform promos in other surrounding parts of Gaborone. Other promoters should take a cue from them and give local artistes a chance to shine.

“It’s a risk worth taking because local artistes in Bulawayo mean business and should be taken seriously. We are also glad to say our parents tuned into BTV and saw us express the talent that they have nurtured,” said Slimza Wa Afrika.

“The tour taught us that a gift is not a gift until you give it away hence sharing our music with fellow Zimbabweans based in Bots and our Batswana friends, was a great experience”.
