NOVAK DJOCKOVIC’S quest for a calendar Grand Slam is over after he lost in the third round of Wimbledon to Sam Querrey yesterday. Having led by two sets to love when play was postponed overnight, Querrey withstood a fight back from the defending champion to win 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7-5) in just over three hours on Court One.
Djokovic had made at least the quarter-finals of every major since the 2009 French Open. But the Australian and French Open champion looked below his best over the course of the two-day match against Querrey, failing to serve out the fourth set and then losing in the tie-break.
Had the contest finished on Friday, Querrey may well have even sealed victory in straight sets.
But it was Djokovic who came out stronger on Saturday morning, reeling off four straight games before the rain hit for the first time.
Further interruptions proved frustrating but the world No 1 eventually took the set to raise his hopes of a comeback.
In an absorbing fourth set, both players dug deep amid a string of break-point chances.
Querrey saved four in one game before Djokovic staved off three, roaring with delight after a superb half volley.
When Djokovic eventually broke for 5-4, he could not close it out as Querrey broke straight back.
Rain again forced the players off but Djokovic held his serve upon resumption to take it to a tie-break.
It looked as though he would force a decider as he opened up a 3-1 lead, only for Querrey to fight back and secure a shock victory when Djokovic missed a forehand. — Sky Sports
