Doctor dragged to maintenance court

A medical doctor from Gweru has been ordered to pay $630 monthly for the upkeep of his two children.

Bright Marere was, on Thursday, dragged to the maintenance court by his wife Sithembiso who was demanding $1,075 to maintain the couple’s two children aged 14 and 9.

Sithembiso told magistrate Manasa Musiiwa that her husband is a medical doctor at a local hospital and although she does not know the exact amount he earns, he could afford to pay the money.

She said one of her children is diabetic and requires access to medical aid.

But Bright told the court his wife was asking for too much money.

“I earn $1,700 per month but I also pay school fees for both my children who are enrolled at a private school.” he said.

Bright said he could afford to assist with money for his child’s medication as he has always been doing that.

He offered to pay $600 as maintenance saying his wife should share the responsibility of taking care of their children.

“If I give anything more than that then it means she won’t be contributing anything towards our children,” Bright said.

Magistrate Musiiwa ruled that he pays $630 every month to maintain his two children.
