Domestic tourism warms up to aquaculture

DOMESTIC tourism is warming up to aquaculture and fishing opportunities availed by the country, participants in the fishing industry have said.

Thanks to its fresh water bodies capacity and the potential to grow in addition to its improved business environment, Zimbabwe has become the latest target for fish farmers.

“Zimbabwe is one of the best places for fishing,” said Mr Moulana Mohammed Ismail, a local businessman.

“People come from all over the world for fishing. This is good for tourism, and gives the country the much-needed forex revenues.

“All this is a spin-off from the country’s fish farming programmes. Zimbabwe has over 12 000 dams. It produces over 10 500 tonnes of fish. There are lodges with busy fishing spots.”

Recently, 20-year-old Mr Yusuf Ismail broke a fishing record in Chirundu after catching a 49-pound, about 22 kg tiger fish.
