Dondo tourney on

ALL is set for the inaugural edition of the Alfred Dondo Memorial Sports tournament to be held in Chivhu tomorrow.

The foundation was started by the late Alfred who adopted 35 children, 10 of them disabled, while the rest are orphans from different parts of Chivhu district to cater for their school fees and support.

The event is hosted by Impala Car Hire and Travel whose chief executive officer Thompson Dondo decided to continue with his elder brothers’ concept of helping the less-privileged and he launched the foundation in December last year at a colourful ceremony.

Patron of the Alfred Dondo foundation Tracy Ngoma said they are now spreading their wings to sport as it also helps the underprivileged members of the society.

“Most of the beneficiaries are at Daramombe and we started at primary school level hoping to take those who have excelled to universities.

“It was unfortunate that the brains behind the foundations passed on before seeing through his project and his brother has decided to continue from where he left.

“The tournament will have soccer, netball and volleyball. We discovered that not all the kids are academically gifted so we decide to explore talent through sport.”

Several schools have already taken part in the zonal, semi-finals and are awaiting the finals on Friday.

“We have organised several prizes for schools who will excel in the tournament and so far we have managed to secure sports kits and uniforms for all who participated. We are also going to bring role models like Alois Bunjira, a former CAPS United player to encourage the pupils’’.

This will not be the first time that villagers in Hokonya Village in Chivhu will have such sort of charity from the group of companies as last year they got an early Christmas present when superstar Oliver Mtukudzi, Jah Prayzah and dendera crooner Suluman Chimbetu performed at the launch of the foundation.
