AN abused Bulawayo man left a packed court in stitches when he pleaded with the magistrate not to send his wife to prison after she was found guilty of assaulting him with a stick several times all over his body saying he loved her so much that he could not bear to have her locked up.
Timothy Ncube (65) from New Luveve drew laughter when he passionately pleaded with Urgent Vundla sitting at the Western Commonage magistrates’ courts to spare his wife Thembinkosi Ncube jail time saying he could not imagine life without her.
This was after his wife was convicted and sentenced to 30 days in prison for physically assaulting him with a stick several times all over the body following a domestic dispute.
“I love my wife and I don’t want her to go to jail and leave me alone,” begged Timothy, drawing a roar of laughter from the gallery.
The court was amazed on how he had suddenly shifted the goal posts by expressing his true love to someone whom he had reported for physical abuse.
His prayers were, however, answered when the magistrate gave Thembinkosi the option of paying a fine of $100.
The State led by prosecutor Sithembinkosi Dube proved that on 18 June at around 6pm Timothy had a misunderstanding with his wife.
The wife, the court heard, then called her brother Awa Ncube who came and assisted her to assault her husband with a stick several times all over his body.
As a result of the assault, Timothy sustained bruises all over his body.
In court Timothy said problems started after he indicated to his wife that they should look for another place to rent. In a fit of anger, Thembinkosi beat him up saying he was the one who was supposed to move out of the house and look for somewhere to stay.
Timothy reported the matter to the police, leading to his wife’s arrest.
Meanwhile, Thembinkosi defended herself saying they just shoved each other and no one was injured in the process.
