Don’t overwork drivers — union

Herald Reporter
THE Transport and General Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe has warned public transport operators against overworking their drivers.

In a statement on Tuesday, the union said road accidents were sometimes caused by tired drivers.

“We are extremely saddened by the tragic loss of lives in a road traffic accident when 31 people were killed, 28 of them on the spot while 35 others were seriously injured when a Pfochez bus burst a tyre and side-swiped a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter omnibus at the 232km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo highway .

“We say to those who lost their relatives, we are with you during this time of bereavement and may the souls of the deceased rest in eternal peace,” he said.

“We therefore implore public transport operators to make sure that drivers are not overworked as this will lead to drivers losing concentration leading to road carnage”.

Mr Matanhire said public transport operators must ensure that their vehicles were fit to carry passengers.

The accident has been declared a national disaster and Government, through the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), met all the funeral expenses.
