Don’t send him to prison: victim pleads

Patrick Chitumba Court Reporter
A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Umguza begged for court leniency on his assailant after he was attacked with an iron bar on the forehead saying he has forgiven him. “Your worship, the accused person has just lost his wife and is looking after four children. Please be lenient with him and give him a lighter sentence so that he can fend for the children,” Mqondisi Mpofu said.

He asked regional magistrate, Collette Ncube to exercise leniency when passing sentence on Agrippa Dube, 45.
Mpofu bowed his head to show the magistrate his forehead saying he was now fine.

“Look I am very fine. His children are now staying with the neighbours. So do not send him to prison,” he said.
Dube, also from Umguza, was convicted of attempted murder on his own plea of guilty and sentenced to four years in prison of which two were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The remaining two years were also suspended on condition he performs 640 hours of community service.
Prosecuting, Trust Mudumo, told how on August 24, last year around 1AM, Mpofu was asleep with Tawanda Dube when Agrippa opened the window of the room they were sleeping in from outside.

Mpofu and Dube came out of the house running and Agrippa hit Mpofu on the forehead using an iron bar.
Mpofu was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals where he was admitted and treated.

A report was made to police leading to Agrippa’s arrest.
