Police must never arrest or use teargas and batons on minors during disturbances or protests, the Minister of Welfare Services for War Veterans, War Collaborators, Former Political Detainees and Restrictees, Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube, said in Bulawayo yesterday. Speaking after donating books in Makokoba suburb, Rtd Col Tshinga Dube, who is also the constituency’s Member of Parliament, said minors must not be arrested during protests.
He said offending children need help. His sentiments follow the arrest of three minors from the constituency in protests early this month. The three were among 83 people who are facing public violence charges in connection with the July 6 protests.
“It is very sad that some police officers become overzealous and end up locking up minors. Police must have enough sense in handling such issues because these children are usually easily swayed by other people,” said Rtd Col Dube.
He said his office was aware of the various needs of his constituents and was working to ensure that they lead decent lives. A total of 10 schools, both primary and secondary, received books from Rtd Col Dube meant to instil a reading culture and improve the public examinations pass rate in the constituency.
“I hope these books which we sourced from the Rotary Club will go a long way in helping children to score better grades. Teachers and school heads must start libraries and ensure that children work harder,” he said.
“We believe these books will also reduce the burden faced by many of our schools where children are forced to share one textbook.” Mr Dan Makoni from the Rotary Club urged school-going children to invest in their future by taking time to read books available in their schools.
