Renowned poet, Dr Gasolo is appealing to the nation for assistance in funding his annual walkathon, aimed at advancing the recognition of the Creative Cultural Industries (CCIs) as a legitimate profession and business.

Named the Dr Gasolo Long Walk To Success, this year’s theme focuses on “Amplifying the voices of the creatives and standing firm in raising awareness against drugs, alcohol and substance abuse as we bridge the gap between the arts and the corporates”.

Dr Gasolo highlighted the urgent need for support, citing the prevalence of stress and depression among artistes, often leading to substance abuse. He called on well-wishers to contribute funds to ensure the success of the third instalment of the walk. The journey begins in Gwanda and ends in Bulawayo.

“The preparation for the walk is more challenging than the walk itself. It requires a lot of travelling and consultations, which requires me to dig deep into my pockets since I don’t have sponsors yet,” said Dr Gasolo.

“This year presents additional challenges as I didn’t secure any paying gigs during the Easter Holidays, which in the past have provided funds for the walk preparations. Those who follow my daily updates on the walk would have noticed that sometimes I even go for weeks without any update due to lack of financial resources,” he said.

Despite facing financial constraints, Dr Gasolo has secured some partnerships, including outfit designs for the walk and promises from other stakeholders.

“So far, I’ve managed to get one partner who has designed my outfits for all three days from Matshetsheni to KoBulawayo and a number of promises from other stakeholders and individuals who are yet to reveal their partnership deals,” he said.

Notable artistes, including Sotja Moyo and Jeys Marabini, have pledged to participate in the walk, along with the support of Chief Dakamela. This year, the walk will commence with a small event in Matshetsheni where Dr Gasolo plans to donate sewing machines to teenage girls not attending school.

“After donating these sewing machines, my partner, who is designing the walk outfits, has generously offered to travel to Matshetsheni and provide sewing lessons to these girls. This initiative aims to empower them to make a living from their new found skills.”

Dr Gasolo said he wants broader collaboration.

“My wish is to secure a partnership with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) so that we can place dustbins with the walk posters at every lay-by from Gwanda to KoBulawayo. Additionally, I plan for a grand welcome celebration at Enkundleni ye Black Umfolosi in Entumbane suburb, featuring performances and speeches aimed at fostering the growth of artistes from this region,” said Dr Gasolo.

The walkathon serves as a platform to connect the arts industry with the business community, fostering unity among artistes and promoting their growth within the region. – @mthabisi_mthire
