Outspoken poet and arts advocate Dr Gasolo is preparing for the fourth edition of his popular 177,5km walkathon, which will take place over three days.

The annual walkathon from Gwanda to Bulawayo is more than just a test of endurance, it serves as a platform to amplify the voices of artistes across Zimbabwe. It aims to spotlight the challenges creatives face, while also highlighting their vital role in shaping society and culture.

Over the years, Dr Gasolo has used the walkathon to connect with communities, artistes and art lovers, sparking conversations about the power of art to drive social change. His commitment has inspired many to support the call for greater recognition and support for artistes.

Speaking on this year’s edition, Dr Gasolo said the 2025 walkathon promises to be the biggest yet, with new partnerships in the pipeline.

“We’re trying our level best to make it bigger and better. There are new promises from some companies. We might be having events along the way, with companies setting up gazebos where I’ll refresh, and local communities accessing services from different service providers.

“The impact of this initiative is expected to resonate far beyond the walkathon itself, fostering a greater appreciation for the arts and the artistes who bring them to life,” said Dr Gasolo.

In a move to broaden the event’s reach, Dr Gasolo revealed plans to digitise the experience.
“We’re still finalising the livestreaming of the whole event from Matshetsheni right up to Bulawayo. We’ll announce it once it’s finalised.”

With preparations well underway, Dr Gasolo continues to stride ahead, not just on the road, but in his mission to uplift Zimbabwe’s artistes and remind the nation of the indispensable role they play. — @mthabisi_mthire
