The eagerly awaited 190km walkathon by poet Dr Gasolo (real name Prince Mazilankatha) is set to commence tomorrow from his rural village in Matshetsheni in Gwanda North.

The prominent artiste from Matabeleland South left Bulawayo on Wednesday morning for his rural home where the walkathon will start.

He is set to walk from Matshetsheni to Bulawayo via Gwanda town. Dr Gasolo said he expects the walk to take three days with stops in Gwanda town, Esigodini, and Bulawayo.

“I’m ready for the walk as I’ve been practising with one of the most important practice being the Esigodini to Bulawayo journey. I hope that through the walk, I’ll manage to realise fruitful results which will go a long way in changing the face of the creative sector in Matabeleland and the country as a whole,” said Dr Gasolo.

Through the walk, which has been dubbed “The long walk to success”, Dr Gasolo seeks to raise awareness of the need to support local acts through securing sponsorship for their works and hosting gigs. A number of artistes from the region have failed to make it in the arts industry due to a number of challenges, chief among them being lack of funding and resources.

In Gwanda town, he’ll host a show whose planning is at an advanced stage. At Esigodini, he will host a breakfast meeting with local creatives and in Bulawayo, he will launch his latest album titled Impande The Roots.
