Dr Mombeshora to headline Bulawayo provincial clean-up campaign

THE Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, is today expected to headline the provincial clean-up campaign at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), as Government intensifies efforts to promote clean and healthy communities.

Dr Mombeshora will be accompanied by his deputy, Sleiman Kwidini, and Permanent Secretary, Dr Aspect Maunganidze.

The clean-up exercise is being held under the national campaign theme, “A Clean Environment, Everyone’s Responsibility”, which seeks to encourage communities to take collective responsibility for maintaining clean and safe surroundings.

In a rallying call for Zimbabweans to actively participate in the exercise, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife said a clean environment was both a civic responsibility and a constitutional right.
“Section 73 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe guarantees every citizen the right to a safe, clean and healthy environment.

Grab your broom, gloves and bins, and join the nation in building a cleaner, greener and healthier Zimbabwe.
Together, let’s make cleanliness a culture. A clean Zimbabwe starts with you,” said the Ministry in a post on its Facebook page.

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) said the clean-up campaign would set the national tone for 30 days of heightened environmental awareness, waste reduction and pollution control initiatives.
The campaign will also build momentum towards the World Clean-up Day, which will be observed on September 20.

EMA said the initiative was deliberately moving beyond the traditional approach of simply collecting waste, with greater emphasis being placed on preventing littering, reducing waste generation, separating waste at source, recovering recyclables and ensuring the responsible disposal of waste.

“Cleaning is everyone’s responsibility. Don’t create a dirty environment to clean it, rather keep the environment clean after the clean-up,” said EMA.
