FASTEN your seatbelts and get ready for some high octane of motor racing as the country’s most popular motorsport event — drag racing — returns to Donnybrook this Saturday.
After a disappointing last-minute postponement of the first event in the 2016 Telecel Drag Racing Series last month due to unsuitable track conditions, the rescheduled event, due this Saturday on the newly resurfaced track, promises overdue action!
Drag racing fans were last month left in anguish due to the cancellation of the original April 24 kick-off date of the 2016 Telecel Drag Racing Series when testing of the freshly surfaced track proved unsatisfactory for racing due to complications with the new surface finish.
Since then, the contractors have made tireless efforts to remedy the situation and have gone beyond all expectations and fully resurfaced the drag strip launch area with a high standard asphalt suitable for this heavy wearing motorsport discipline.
“The new surface laid last week offers drag racing fans the best start line launching surface Donnybrook has seen in over a decade. Although we were concerned with the initial resurfacing problems last month, the new asphalt surface is fantastic and will aid in reducing tyre wear and more importantly in reducing 60ft and elapsed times,” commented Mano Zevgolis, the chairman of the Sables Dragpro Club, who run drag racing in this country.
He went on to say that drag racing testing on the new surface had gone “even better than anticipated”.
“The track is now in great condition — many thanks to all those who have worked so effortlessly to get the track perfect for us — and this is the chance for the competitors to get new times, new records, it’s like a new road.”
The rescheduling of the event from its usual Sunday post to a Saturday has resulted in some mixed feedback with those who work on a Saturday being affected by having to plan for a shorter day’s excursion, but on the other hand churchgoers are thankful that they can make it to their favourite sport and place of worship in one weekend.
Like many fans, competitors have been starved of race action since the Grand Finale Drag Racing event of the 2015 Telecel Drag Racing Series in October last year and have been looking forward to the much-anticipated 2016 Series, which again comprises of four action packed events.
