A witness on the stand puzzled the court as she claimed she had no knowledge of what she was testifying about other than what she heard from the police.

The accused’s mother, who was brought in said she was not at home and in Nketa, Bulawayo attending a funeral on the day in question of the alleged offences.

“I know nothing of what transpired on the day of the alleged offences other than what I was told by the police which was written on the police statement. I did not attend the court to stand as a witness. I normally come here on the dates you remand the accused person to appear in court,” she said.

This took place when the accused (name withheld) appeared before magistrate Sekai Benhilda Chiwundura facing three charges of rape, attempted murder and robbery. The matter was remanded to 30 September 2024 for judgement.

The court heard that on 19 July 2024, the accused went to their Cowdray Park home where he sexually assaulted his ex-wife, stole her phone and beat her using a bottle. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.
