Drink of the week: Sip into Grand Arcades’ Killer Cocktail

Peter Matika

IN this week’s adventure in the search for the ultimate summer drink, our path led us to the astonishing Grand Arcade Centre in Bulawayo.

A lovely blustery food and beverage parlour located in the heart of the city centre just close to the iconic Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo statue.

Just like its name suggests, the establishment’ barman-cum mixologist – Mehluli Moyo, highly suggests you down it on a full stomach or else suffer the consequence – a nasty hangover, consisting of stomach convulsions toppled with a lack of appetite.

“It’s named a killer cocktail because of its contents. It contains three types of liquor. In making it you add two thimbleful of the strawberry flavoured liquor with two scoops of ice then blend to a snowy texture, before layering it into a cocktail glass. And likewise for the second liquor, which is a blue curacao, which is the second layer.

“For the third layer we add a white pina colada blended with rum and ice to acquire a beautiful white flake texture. To top it off and make it look arousing and tasty, we add just a few drops of granadilla syrup.

“For the presentation we add an umbrella straw and a garnish of pineapple for the flavourful appearance,” said Mehluli, who states that he has created 10 different cocktails out of the back of his mind.

Some of the cocktails include a flaming flamingo and just like the name suggests it’s a red coloured drink of course with a flame.

“The other is a frozen margarita and as you guessed it, it’s mostly iced,” he said.

Darting back, he noted that no one should ever drink on an empty stomach, especially with his cocktails.

“As we not only offer drinks but succulent and exquisite meals for our signature cocktail, I would advise you to have it with the pork chops and chips, topped with the Grand Arcade salad. If you don’t take pork then the chicken club wrap with chips and of course the salad would be ideal,” suggests Mehluli.

The Grand Arcade Centre, which is run by prominent business lady Flattela Nleya boasts of a Sandton experience.

“The ambience is just sublime. We do a lot here and cater for everyone. We host people such as corporates, themed events and of course we have had the chance to experience marriage proposals.

“Our menu is vast and caters for all but at most we do enjoy the company of our bar patrons, whom we get to experience a lot with,” said Nleya.
