A 26-YEAR-OLD man from Bulilima who lost control of his vehicle resulting in the death of his 11-year-old nephew has been fined $600.
Prudence Moyo of Tjankwa area, who is unlicensed, was driving along the Plumtree-Nyabane Road in Bulilima District when he was involved in an accident in November last year.
Moyo was speeding when his vehicle veered off the road and rolled twice before landing on its roof.
His nephew, Mluleki Nkomo, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died on the spot after succumbing to severe injuries.
Moyo was convicted on his own plea of guilty to culpable homicide and driving without a valid licence by Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa.
He was fined $600 for both charges with the option of a three months jail term if he defaults on the fine.
Prosecuting, Elisha Mazorodze, said: ‘’On 10 November Moyo was driving a Toyota Regius vehicle along Plumtree- Nyabane Road. When he reached the 26 kilometre peg, he lost control of the vehicle.
‘’The car veered off the road and overturned twice before landing on its roof. Mluleki Nkomo, who was sitting on the passenger seat, died on the spot. His body was conveyed to the Plumtree District Hospital,’’ said Mazorodze.
He said a post mortem report revealed that Mluleki had died as a result of injuries sustained during the accident.
Mazorodze said Moyo was negligent by driving at an excessive speed and failing to stop when the accident seemed imminent.
In another incident, a Plumtree taxi driver has been fined $300 for negligent driving.
Tobias Nyabocho, 23, was driving along the Bulawayo-Plumtree Road when he lost control of the vehicle and four passengers in his car were injured in the process.
The taxi driver was convicted on his own plea of guilty to negligent driving by the same magistrate. He was ordered to pay a 300 fine or serve two months in prison in case of default.
