A driver with a local security company last week lost a vehicle that he was using to ferry security guards to car thieves he had offered a ride in Mbare, Harare.
Police confirmed the incident and said investigations were in progress.
It is alleged that Peter Mushavaviri from Lankun Security was assigned to transport security guards to their respective working places in Mbare using a Toyota Raum on Tuesday.
During the process, he started ferrying passengers using the vehicle, charging 5 rand per person.
Sources close to the investigations said he was given US$5 and stopped the vehicle in the Sunningdale area to look for change.
One of the suspects took advantage and drove off in the vehicle.
A report was made to the police and no arrests have been made.
Cases of car-jacking and theft of cars have declined following the recent arrest of some the criminals behind it.
Last month, three armed robbers who disappeared with a Nissan NP300 truck belonging to the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Cde Lazarus Dokora, in Mt Darwin before burning it to a shell to conceal evidence were jailed for a total of 45 years.
Moreblessing Anesu Nyamutata (24), Thulani Ndlovu alias Tinashe Chibondo (24) and Moses Marumahoko (24) were convicted on four counts of armed robbery.
They will appear in court again facing seven more counts, including the case involving the minister’s truck they burnt.
Last week Vice President Joice Mujuru said general crime had gone down by 11 percent between January and July this year as compared to the same period last year.
VP Mujuru said 110 802 cases were reported last year as compared to 98 342 cases reported this year.
